What happened
Rivian (RIVN) stock rose about 7% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the electric-truck maker beat Q3 earnings estimates with $2.16B in revenue and raised its 2026 delivery forecast. Sales were $2.16 billion, up 38% from a year earlier, against about $2.02 billion expected. The loss, ignoring some one-off costs, was 48 cents a share, smaller than the 61 cents analysts expected. Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles, up 46%, and its new R2 SUV was its best seller. It now expects 67,000 to 70,000 deliveries in 2026, up from 65,000 to 70,000.
Why it matters
Rivian is still losing money while trying to grow, so a bigger-than-expected sales jump suggests its new R2 SUV is finding buyers. The company also narrowed its expected 2026 loss and cut planned spending by about $300 million at the midpoint, which eases worries about cash. It still lost $913 million in the quarter, so profit remains a long way off.
