What happened
US GDP grew at a 3.4% annual rate in the third quarter, the government said Thursday, beating forecasts as AI-driven business investment surged. Economists had expected about 3%, and growth in the spring was 2.2%. Spending on computers and other information equipment jumped 37.4%, and shoppers raised their spending 3.8%. Separately, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge (PCE) rose 3.6% from a year ago in September, with core inflation, which leaves out food and energy, at 3.1%.
Why it matters
The US economy is growing faster than expected, but prices are still rising faster than the Federal Reserve's 2% goal. That makes it harder for the Fed, the country's central bank, to lower interest rates, which keep loans and mortgages costly. The Fed kept its rate at 3.75%–4.00% on Wednesday and will weigh this data in December. Gasoline was the biggest driver of the monthly price rise.
