What happened
Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM) stock fell about 18% after hours on Wednesday to near $51 after an earnings miss and a lower outlook, as fewer shoppers visited its stores. Sales rose 5% to $2.3 billion, below the $2.34 billion expected, and profit of $1.21 a share also fell short. Sales at stores open at least a year fell 0.9% as customer visits dropped 3.3%, partly due to a cyclospora food-illness outbreak. For the fourth quarter, Sprouts expects those sales to fall 2% to 4% and profit of $0.47 to $0.51 a share.
Why it matters
Sprouts Farmers Market is still opening stores at a record pace, yet fewer shoppers are visiting each one, which hurts how much each store earns. The grocer also plans a national price-cutting push starting in January 2027, which management says will squeeze profit margins in the near term. Its market value was already down about 45% over the past year before this report.
