What happened
Broadcom (AVGO) stock rose 4% to $342.33 on Tuesday after Bank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley lined up $63B to finance its AI chips for Anthropic, plus an analyst upgrade. A new company set up for the deal will buy Broadcom's AI chips and networking gear and lease them to Anthropic, with deliveries starting in 2027. About $43.5B, or 69%, is the safest layer of debt (senior debt), and Broadcom is promising to help cover losses if the equipment loses value. Reports say the banks hesitated until Broadcom's CEO agreed to higher interest rates.
Why it matters
Broadcom's deal shows how much borrowed money now pays for the AI buildout. Lenders buy the chips and Anthropic rents them, so Broadcom can sell chips without waiting for Anthropic to pay upfront. The catch is that Broadcom's promise to cover lenders' losses ties its own finances to Anthropic's success, with about $72.5B of exposure across two deals (per).
