What happened
Jio Platforms (parent Reliance Industries, RELIANCE:NSE) shares trade about 22% above their ₹1,119 IPO price, near ₹1,365, in the grey market before Wednesday's listing, after bids reached 22 times the shares offered. The ₹30,213 crore (about $3.2 billion) sale is India's largest, and bids of about $77 billion set a subscription record. Big institutions bid for 70.55 times the shares set aside for them, while small retail investors bid for 2.72 times. The grey market is unofficial trading before a listing, so its prices can differ from the real opening price.
Why it matters
Jio Platforms is the digital arm of Reliance Industries and runs one of India's largest phone networks, so its debut lets the public own it directly for the first time. At ₹1,119 a share it is valued at about ₹10.3 lakh crore ($108 billion), close to rival Bharti Airtel's roughly ₹11.9 lakh crore. Up to ₹27,500 crore of the money raised is meant to repay debt owed by Jio's telecom unit.
