What happened
Wheat (ZW=F) futures fell 3% to about $6.63 a bushel on Friday as traders weighed US-led Miami talks on a partial ceasefire covering energy sites and grain shipments. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are pitching the plan to Ukrainian and European officials. Russia's Vladimir Putin ruled out a pause in long-range strikes on October 1, and the Kremlin says it wants a full settlement instead. Ukraine's president said he cannot yet say whether a deal is possible.
Why it matters
Wheat prices matter because grain from the Black Sea region feeds buyers across Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and attacks on ships and ports have made it harder to ship. A pause in those attacks could ease prices, but Russia has so far refused anything short of a full settlement. Wheat is still about 33% higher than a year ago (per).
