What happened
Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 0.4% to 50,994.99 on Thursday, its second straight loss, as oil prices rebounded and Treasury yields rose. Oil jumped about 4% during the day, then eased when President Donald Trump said the US will not attack Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Yields on 10-year government bonds, which set the cost of many loans, hit a 24-year high of 5.36% overnight (per). Earlier this week, the US trade deficit, the gap between what America buys and sells abroad, grew to $105.6 billion for August, a 17-month high, on record imports.
Why it matters
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell because pricier oil and higher bond yields are squeezing stocks at the same time. Costlier oil can raise gasoline and shipping bills, and higher yields make mortgages and business loans more expensive. Record imports of $420.8 billion, led by oil, gold and AI chips, show Americans are still buying heavily from abroad despite tariffs, which are taxes on imported goods.
