What happened
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday there are strong indications Iran played a part in the RAF Fairford incident, after five men were arrested near the base on terror and explosives suspicions. Police say they found petrol in three vans but no explosives, and the five men were released on bail on Monday while the investigation continues. Iran's embassy and foreign minister reject the claim, with Abbas Araghchi saying Britain is "barking up the wrong tree". On Thursday, police also arrested a dual UK-Iranian national over the incident, and no one has been formally charged.
Why it matters
RAF Fairford matters because US bombers use the base in their war against Iran, so any threat to it touches the wider conflict. If Britain's belief that Iran played a part is backed by evidence, it could harden UK policy toward Tehran and raise security at bases. For now, officials have given no details and Iran denies involvement. Oil is already high, with Brent near $102 a barrel, mainly on separate US military moves.
