What happened
MongoDB (MDB) stock dropped 24% to about $312 premarket on Monday after CEO CJ Desai resigned immediately to join Meta as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, one day before investor day. Desai, who had been at MongoDB less than a year, will head Meta's new enterprise software division reporting directly to Mark Zuckerberg. MongoDB founder Dev Ittycheria, who built the company from $35 million to $2.3 billion in revenue over 11 years, returned immediately as interim CEO while the board begins a formal CEO search. The company reaffirmed full-year fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of $2.99 billion to $3.03 billion despite the upheaval.
Why it matters
MongoDB is the database platform that powers thousands of AI applications and serves more than 70,000 customers, including about three-quarters of the Fortune 100. Losing the CEO one day before a major investor day raises unavoidable questions about whether leadership had advance warning of bad news, even though guidance was reaffirmed. The abrupt departure also leaves MongoDB without the executive who built many of its key enterprise client relationships at the precise moment competition for AI workloads is intensifying.
