What happened
Fluence Energy (FLNC) stock fell 22% to about $7 on Thursday after the battery-storage maker slashed its fiscal 2026 revenue target to $2.4 billion, citing production failures at its Houston manufacturing plant. Fluence builds large battery systems that store electricity from wind and solar farms for utilities and grid operators; its Houston contract facility managed just one unit a day rather than the eleven originally planned, hurt by broken welding-automation robots and workforce shortages. The full-year adjusted operating loss forecast also widened sharply, from roughly $10 million to $200 million, as missed project milestones drove about two-thirds of the additional shortfall. Barclays, Mizuho, and Piper Sandler simultaneously issued Underweight ratings with price targets between $6 and $10.
Why it matters
Fluence Energy is among the largest pure-play battery storage companies in the U.S., and its repeated shortfalls point to wider difficulties scaling up domestic manufacturing. The Houston failures show that building a U.S. battery factory fast is harder than planned — bad news for energy policy that needs cheap, local storage to back up renewables. The widening losses and fresh Underweight ratings also raise questions about Fluence's ability to fund operations without new outside investment.
