Lead
Enphase Energy (NASDAQ: ENPH) fell about 17% to roughly $24.65 in premarket trading on October 28, 2026. The microinverter and home-battery maker reported third-quarter revenue of $293.3 million, down from $410.4 million in the year-earlier quarter and nearly flat on the $291.9 million recorded in the second quarter. Fourth-quarter guidance of $225 million to $255 million, with a midpoint near $240 million, landed roughly 20% below consensus. The shares were trading near their 52-week low. What Happened in Enphase's Third Quarter?
Enphase missed on both revenue and earnings. Revenue of $293.3 million compared with consensus of about $304 million, and non-GAAP earnings of $0.41 per share compared with an expected $0.51. GAAP net income was $23.4 million, or $0.17 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income was $54.0 million.
A $26.5 million investment impairment reduced both earnings measures by roughly $0.14 to $0.15 per share. The quarter included about $85 million of safe harbor revenue, which comes from customers securing eligibility for tax incentives. The company shipped about 1.42 million IQ microinverters (655.2 megawatts DC) and 129.9 megawatt hours of IQ batteries.
Non-GAAP gross margin slipped to 45.0% from 46.8% in the second quarter. Product mix drove most of the decline, and reciprocal tariffs took about 1.3 percentage points off the margin. Cash and marketable securities stood at $931.8 million. Free cash flow was negative $11.4 million for the quarter.
Why Did Enphase Shares Fall So Sharply?
Shares fell because demand in the company's two biggest markets weakened again, and management said it sees no near-term recovery. Global sell-through, the rate at which installers sell to homeowners, rose only about 1% sequentially against an expectation of 10% growth. That left revenue at the low end of guidance.
In the United States, sell-through rose 5% from the second quarter but fell 35% from a year earlier. The chief executive cited higher interest rates and the expiration of the Section 25D federal residential tax credit as the main pressures. He said the company is not seeing a meaningful recovery in U.S. demand.
Europe also weakened. Revenue there fell about 11% sequentially, with France especially soft. Microinverter activations in that market dropped 24%.
What Does the Fourth-Quarter Guidance Signal?
The guidance points to a deeper contraction before any stabilization. Enphase expects Q4 revenue of $225 million to $255 million, including about $51.2 million of safe harbor revenue and 100 to 120 megawatt hours of battery shipments. The outlook assumes a 10% sequential decline in sell-through. The company also plans to under-ship by about $20 million to reduce distributor inventory ahead of a seasonally slow first quarter.
Margins are set to compress further. Non-GAAP gross margin is guided to 40% to 43%, and GAAP gross margin to 38% to 41%. Tariffs account for roughly 2 percentage points of that pressure. Management expects some cash relief in the fourth quarter from about $108 million of anticipated refunds tied to 2024 production tax credits.
Strategic Context
Management framed the weak core business against five growth initiatives:
- Residential batteries: shipments are projected to rise about 50%, from 450 megawatt hours in 2026 to 675 megawatt hours in 2027. A fifth-generation IQ Battery is due in the first quarter of 2027.
- Propel lease program: the third-party ownership offering has more than 350 participating installers and a 71% battery attach rate.
- Commercial storage: the company targets growth from about $30 million to more than $100 million a year.
- Bidirectional EV charging: development is under way with three global automakers, with revenue of $15 million to $20 million projected for 2027.
- IQ Solid-State Transformer: Enphase demonstrated conversion of 13.8 kV AC to 800 VDC for AI data center power. It targets commercial shipments in 2028 and $1 billion in annual revenue by 2030.
For 2027, management models about $200 million of quarterly core revenue plus about $200 million from the new initiatives. That would put total revenue near the current run rate, though it relies on products that have yet to ship at scale.
Outlook
Enphase enters its seasonally weakest stretch with U.S. residential demand down more than a third from a year ago, European softness spreading, and tariffs weighing on margins. The balance sheet, with $931.8 million in cash and securities, gives the company room to fund its pivot toward batteries, leasing, and data center power. The next test is whether fourth-quarter results land within the $225 million to $255 million range and whether the first-quarter 2027 battery launch supports the 2027 framework.
