AMD Stock Hits Record as Citi Lifts Target to $800

AMD shares jumped about 4% to a record near $657 after Citi lifted its target to $800, betting AI agents like Meta's Muse will spark a server CPU boom.

  • AMD rose about 4% to roughly $657.50 on Oct. 6, a record, after Citi raised its target to $800 from $575.
  • Citi sees the CPU market growing from $25 billion last year to $300 billion by 2030 as AI agents proliferate.
  • Intel fell 2% to $114.35 and Nvidia gained 1% to $241.92, so the move was concentrated in AMD.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) climbed to an all-time high on Tuesday, Oct. 6, after Citi raised its price target on the stock to $800 from $575. Shares were up about 4% at roughly $657.50 in late-morning trading, after a 1.7% gain in premarket. The stock has more than tripled since the start of the year, making it one of the strongest performers among large-cap ai stocks.

Citi attributed the revision to the spread of personal AI agents, including Meta Platforms' (NASDAQ: META) Muse. The firm described AMD as "the key beneficiary of the CPU renaissance."

What Did Citi Say About AI Agents and CPUs?

Citi argues that AI agents consume far more general-purpose compute than chatbots, which shifts demand toward server processors as well as accelerators. Its analyst updated the firm's CPU model after the launch of several agents, including Muse and OpenAI's Dots.

The firm estimates the CPU market will expand from about $25 billion last year to $300 billion by 2030. It also estimates that 100 million daily users of Muse could require roughly 200,000 to 390,000 Blackwell-class GPUs. Each of those accelerators relies on host processors, which broadens the opportunity beyond graphics chips.

Citi named AMD the primary beneficiary of the rebound in server processor demand and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) a secondary one.

Why Did AMD Shares React So Strongly?

AMD rose sharply because the revision came on top of strong momentum and reinforced a growth story investors already favored. The new Citi target implies upside of roughly 22% from Tuesday's level.

Stifel also raised its target, to $700, and pointed to strength led by server processors. It said management's longer-term data center commentary may matter more than third-quarter results themselves. The stock's record intraday high of about $658 came as buyers chased the move.

AMD chief executive Lisa Su has said the company will "substantially increase" supply capacity next year to meet "very high demand." That commentary supports the view that the constraint on growth is supply, not orders.

How Did Rivals Trade?

Rivals did not follow AMD higher. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) edged up 1% to $241.92, consistent with the view that stronger processor demand sits alongside, rather than against, accelerator strength.

Intel slipped 2% to $114.35 despite being named in the Citi note. The divergence suggests the market treats the thesis as specific to AMD, which has taken server share from Intel over several years and is better positioned in the current product cycle.

Strategic Context

The case rests on a change in how AI workloads are run. Training large models drove the first wave of spending, concentrated in GPUs. Agents that act continuously on behalf of users, calling tools, browsing and executing code, create orchestration and inference work that runs on CPUs. If adoption reaches the scale Citi projects, hyperscalers would need to expand processor fleets alongside GPU clusters.

For AMD, the opportunity spans its EPYC server CPUs and its Instinct accelerators, giving it exposure on both sides of the build-out. The risks are execution on supply, competition from Intel and Arm-based designs, and whether agent usage grows as fast as forecast.

What Comes Next for AMD?

The next test is the company's third-quarter report. Investors will look for data center revenue, server CPU growth and concrete figures on 2027 capacity. Any gap between the Citi and Stifel assumptions and management's own guidance would be exposed there.

Customer commentary matters as well. Capital spending plans from large buyers of AI infrastructure, including Meta, will indicate whether the agent-driven demand case is translating into orders.

Outlook

AMD reached a record on a 39% increase in Citi's price target, built on a forecast that AI agents will lift the CPU market twelvefold by 2030. Rivals did not share in the rally, and the stock's gains this year leave expectations high. The third-quarter results and 2027 supply commentary will show whether the numbers justify them.
