What happened
Novo Nordisk (NVO) stock rose about 5% to roughly $42 on Wednesday after the drugmaker beat earnings and raised its 2026 outlook on strong Wegovy pill sales. The weight-loss pill sold 5.4 billion Danish kroner (about $810 million) last quarter, up 53% from the quarter before and above the 4.6 billion analysts expected. Total sales were 79.2 billion kroner, up 4% after removing currency swings. Novo now expects 2026 sales and operating profit to change by between -2% and +2%, up from -6% to flat.
Why it matters
Novo Nordisk makes Wegovy and Ozempic, popular weight-loss and diabetes medicines known as GLP-1 drugs, and this is the third time this year it has raised its own forecast (guidance). That suggests its slide against rival Eli Lilly may be slowing, though Novo shares are still down about 13% this year. Prices for these drugs are also falling, which limits how much sales growth turns into profit.
