What happened
Bitcoin (BTC) rose about 3.7% to roughly $80,500 on Wednesday after Democrats won control of Congress, which weakened the dollar and raised hopes the Iran conflict and high oil prices will end. Bitcoin first dipped to $75,600 on election night, then bounced as stocks rallied and oil fell more than 8%. Traders who had bet on a price drop were forced to close about $403 million of those bets, which pushed the price up faster (per). The dollar fell to its lowest level since September 29, which tends to help assets priced in dollars.
Why it matters
Bitcoin is moving more like a stock than a safe haven right now, rising alongside shares as hopes grow that the Iran conflict and high oil prices will end. A Democratic Congress may also mean tougher rules for crypto, such as stricter consumer protections, which analysts say could slow industry-friendly laws. Bitcoin is still about 36% below its all-time high of roughly $126,080 (per).
