What happened
Yum Brands (YUM) stock slipped 0.2% to about $157 on Tuesday after its Q3 earnings beat estimates but Taco Bell same-store sales fell 4% following a cyclospora food-poisoning outbreak. Profit excluding one-time items was $1.56 a share, above the $1.49 analysts expected. Sales rose 4% to $2.05 billion, in line with forecasts. Taco Bell's sales at restaurants open at least a year (same-store sales) had their first drop since 2020, but they are up about 1% so far in the fourth quarter.
Why it matters
Yum Brands counts on Taco Bell as a main growth engine, so a food-safety scare there can weigh on the whole company. The outbreak, which ran from July 17 to September 11, shows how quickly customers can stay away. The fast rebound suggests many have returned. Yum also finished selling Pizza Hut this quarter, leaving it more focused on Taco Bell and KFC.
