What happened
The 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y) rose about 6 basis points to 4.96% on Tuesday after September job openings jumped to 7.52 million and layoffs fell, signaling a resilient job market. Job openings, a count of unfilled positions, rose by 333,000, the highest in four months and above the roughly 7.1 million economists expected. Layoffs fell by 127,000 to 1.64 million, the lowest since March 2025. Yields rise when investors expect interest rates to stay higher, and the move also came as midterm election voting began.
Why it matters
Treasury yields help set borrowing costs for mortgages, car loans and business debt, so a rise can make loans more expensive. Many openings and few layoffs show employers are still hiring and keeping workers, which can keep pay rising and inflation pressure alive. That could give the Federal Reserve less reason to lower interest rates soon.
