Oil Rises to $107 After US Strike on Iran's Qeshm Island

CNBC2 min read7 sources

Why is oil up today?

Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 2% to about $107 a barrel on Tuesday after US strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, which raised fears of wider conflict and supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.

Key numbers

Brent crude$107+2.0% on Tuesday
WTI crude (US benchmark)$98.15+1.75% on Tuesday
Brent Monday close$104.77-7% on Monday
Brent 1-year change+64%per [7]

What happened

Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 2% to about $107 a barrel on Tuesday after US strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, which raised fears of wider conflict and supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. US officials called the strikes defensive, after Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired missiles at US assets and shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone. Oil had fallen about 7% on Monday on hopes of peace talks, so Tuesday's rise wins back part of that drop. Iran has rejected Washington's "excessive demands".

Why it matters

Brent crude is the global price benchmark for oil, so big moves can feed through to petrol prices and everyday costs. High oil prices have already added to US inflation and gasoline costs, and the strikes came a day before US midterm elections. The swing shows how quickly peace hopes and escalation fears can move prices: down about 7% on Monday, then up about 2% on Tuesday.
