What happened
ECB President Christine Lagarde said Thursday she will resign on Feb. 7, 2027, nine months early, opening a race to succeed her as the euro slipped 0.2% to about $1.113. She told the bank's top decision-making group (the Governing Council) and European Council President António Costa; her term was due to run to October 2027. She said she cannot stay neutral on world events, and that running for French president would not be a good idea. Former central bank chiefs Klaas Knot of the Netherlands and Pablo Hernández de Cos of Spain are seen as frontrunners.
Why it matters
The European Central Bank (ECB) sets interest rates for the countries that share the euro, so whoever replaces Lagarde will influence loan, mortgage and savings costs across them. Prices are rising at about twice the ECB's 2% goal, and a rate rise is expected in December. EU leaders want a successor chosen before France's April 2027 election, where far-right leader Marine Le Pen is leading polls.
