What happened

Binance's BNB token fell 3.9% to $716.69 on Friday after hackers used a compromised engineer's laptop to take $6.3 billion, a breach analysts link to North Korea. Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, says the attacker used the laptop to send unauthorized withdrawals on 10 blockchains, mostly within about 20 minutes. That is about four times the record $1.5 billion Bybit theft in 2025. Partners froze about $3 billion, and Binance set aside $6.34 billion to repay customers.

Why it matters

Binance is the world's largest crypto exchange, so a $6.3 billion theft tests whether customers can trust big exchanges to keep their coins safe. Withdrawals are paused, and the news pushed Bitcoin lower and wiped out more than $1.5 billion in borrowed-money bets (liquidations) across crypto. Binance says customers will be repaid in full, so the open question is trust rather than lost savings.
