Why it matters
PPG Industries makes paint and coatings used on homes, cars, factories and aircraft, so its results give a read on how demand is holding up across the economy. The company said it fully made up for higher costs by raising prices, and its sales have now grown for seven quarters in a row. Aerospace was a bright spot, while factory coatings earned thinner profits.
