What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) rose 1.4% to about $115 on Wednesday after reports that the US and Israel drew up plans for a short but intensive Iran strike after the midterms. The plan, first reported by The New York Times, would last about three days and could target Iran's nuclear sites, energy facilities and missile stocks. President Trump has not approved it, and talks with Iran continue. Brent, the main global oil price benchmark, had slipped 1.7% to $113.88 on Tuesday on hopes those talks would calm tensions.
Why it matters
Brent crude is the price that sets the tone for petrol, diesel and air fares around the world, so a move toward $115 can raise costs for households and businesses. Prices are already near a six-month high because the war has disrupted shipping around the Middle East, and a new round of strikes could make oil harder to get. The report also adds to uncertainty ahead of the US midterm elections on 3 November.
