What happened
Whirlpool (WHR) stock fell about 9% in after-hours trading on Monday, to roughly $24, after the appliance maker reported a third-quarter loss and cut its 2026 outlook for the third time. Sales fell 8.8% from a year ago to $3.68 billion, and the company lost 21 cents per share (excluding one-time items) when analysts expected a profit. For 2026, Whirlpool now expects a loss of about $1.30 per share, versus the $7 profit it forecast in January. Profit at its North American business fell 44.7% as high interest rates kept home buyers away.
Why it matters
Whirlpool's forecast shows people are buying fewer big household items, such as fridges and washing machines, because high interest rates have slowed home sales. It is the company's third forecast cut this year, and it now expects a full-year loss instead of a profit. The shares were already down more than 60% this year before this news.
