What happened
General Motors (GM) stock rose nearly 5% to about $80 on Tuesday after the automaker said it will move to Nasdaq on Nov. 17, making it eligible for the Nasdaq-100 index. GM will move its shares from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq. Its last day on the NYSE is Nov. 16, the ticker stays "GM", and shareholders do not need to do anything. It is the first legacy automaker listed on Nasdaq, and Walmart, Hilton and Palantir have made similar moves recently. By midday, quote data showed the gain at about 6%.
Why it matters
General Motors is signaling that it wants to be seen as a technology company, not only a traditional carmaker. Its finance chief said its customer-focused, technology-driven strategy makes Nasdaq a "natural home". The listing makes GM eligible to join the Nasdaq-100, a major stock index, but eligibility does not guarantee a spot. The switch does not change how many cars GM sells or how much it earns.
