What happened
Corning (GLW) stock fell about 0.8% to $126.69 on Tuesday after its Q3 earnings beat, as an early 3% gain faded on worries over heavy spending and a weaker solar unit. Corning, which makes glass and fiber-optic cables for AI data centers, earned an adjusted $0.91 a share on $5.08 billion in sales, beating forecasts of $0.88 and $5.03 billion. Shares first rose about 3% before trading opened, then slid as much as 4.7% before recovering most of the loss. Investors focused on the solar unit, which lost $7 million, and on roughly $2 billion of spending this year (per).
Why it matters
Corning is a major supplier of the fiber-optic cables that move data inside AI data centers, so its results show whether the AI building boom is still growing. Sales in that business jumped 44% from a year ago, and the company expects fourth-quarter profit above forecasts. The stock's slide despite good news shows investors are also weighing how much it costs to keep up with demand.
