What happened
Oil (Brent crude, BZ=F) rose 2.5% to about $116 a barrel on Friday as Iran strike fears grew, with Trump hinting at more attacks and Houthi strikes hitting Saudi sites. Trump said the US has "knocked the hell out of" Iran and "may do it a little bit further," and said Tehran is faking attack and mine reports to lift oil prices before the 3 November midterms. Oil is up about 17% in a month. The Financial Times reported that UN Ambassador Mike Waltz said a stalemate could last a year; Waltz later said he would not "put out hypotheticals".
Why it matters
Oil prices feed into what people pay for gasoline, flights and everyday goods, so a jump to about $116 a barrel matters well beyond traders. Prices are rising because markets fear the US-Iran fight will widen or drag on, and because attacks now reach Saudi Arabia, a major supplier. About 20% of the world's oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz before the war, so new strikes put that route at risk.
