What happened
Las Vegas Sands (LVS) stock fell 2.6% to $36.53 on Thursday after the casino operator missed third-quarter revenue estimates by about $110M on weak high-end gambling in Macau and Singapore. Revenue was $3.22 billion, down 3.3% from a year ago and below the $3.33 billion analysts expected. Net income fell to $352 million from $491 million. Management said fewer big-spending gamblers visited Singapore's Marina Bay Sands and its Macau resorts, calling the quarter "aberrational". The board still raised its 2027 dividend 20% to $1.44 per share a year.
Why it matters
Las Vegas Sands is a major casino operator in Macau and Singapore, so weak spending by wealthy gamblers shows how quickly its profits can slip. Profit from running its casinos and hotels (adjusted property EBITDA) fell to $1.12 billion from $1.34 billion a year earlier. The 20% dividend raise and $950 million of share buybacks in the quarter signal management's confidence in its cash flow.
