10-Year Treasury Yield Falls Below 5% as Rate-Hike Odds Fade
Why did the 10-year Treasury yield fall below 5%?
The 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y) fell 0.19 percentage points to 4.95% on Thursday, its first drop below 5% since Sept. 23, as a tech selloff and fading Fed hike odds drew investors to bonds.

What happened
The 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y) fell 0.19 percentage points to 4.95% on Thursday, its first drop below 5% since Sept. 23, as a tech selloff and fading Fed hike odds drew investors to bonds. A bond's yield falls when more people buy it, and many did as worries about AI spending hit chip and tech stocks, with the Nasdaq down more than 2%. It was the biggest one-day fall in the yield since March 2023. Oil prices also rose as tensions with Iran grew, adding to the rush toward safer assets.
Why it matters
The 10-year Treasury yield is a key guide for borrowing costs, including mortgages and business loans, so a drop below 5% eases some pressure after yields hit their highest in about two decades earlier this month. Investors now see an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve (the Fed) as less likely: the chance of a hike at its October meeting fell to 7.2% from 27.7% a week earlier (per). Markets still put about 76% odds on a hike in December.
