What happened
Spotify (SPOT) stock rose about 10% to $579.49 in Thursday morning trading after earnings showed premium subscribers beat forecasts at 306 million and gross margin hit a record 33%. The 306 million paying subscribers were one million above Spotify's own forecast, and it expects 316 million by year-end. Gross margin, the share of sales left after paying for music and delivery, rose about 1.4 points from a year ago. Sales of €4.97 billion and earnings of €2.48 per share were slightly below Wall Street forecasts of about €4.98 billion and €2.84.
Why it matters
Spotify's results suggest people keep paying for music streaming and that the company is keeping more of each euro it earns. It also forecast 10 million more subscribers and €820 million in operating profit next quarter, which analysts had not expected to be that high. That gave investors a reason to look past the small miss on earnings per share.
