What happened
Shanghai Composite (000001.SS) fell 1.5% to 3,658 on Thursday, extending a 10-week losing streak, as an AI-stock selloff and rising oil prices weighed on Chinese shares. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index sank about 3% the same day, dragged down by tech giants such as Alibaba, which lost about 6%. China's market regulator also summoned Alibaba, JD.com and other online retailers over product safety, with no penalties announced. Another major index, the CSI 300, fell into a bear market, meaning it is more than 20% below its June high.
Why it matters
The Shanghai Composite, China's best-known stock index, has now fallen for 10 weeks in a row and is down about 7% in the past month. Investors doubt that huge spending on artificial intelligence (AI) will pay off, while weak shopping demand and a long property slump also weigh on China. Oil above $110 a barrel adds to nervousness worldwide.
