What happened
Dow Inc. (DOW) stock rose 2.9% on Thursday to $31.26 after the chemical maker beat third-quarter profit estimates and forecast fourth-quarter earnings above Wall Street expectations. Sales rose 13% from a year ago to $11.3 billion, helped by higher plastic (polyethylene) prices after Middle East supply disruptions. Dow forecast fourth-quarter core earnings of about $1.54 billion, above the $1.38 billion analysts expected. It has finished nearly 70% of a plan to cut about 4,500 jobs, or 13% of its workforce.
Why it matters
Dow Inc. makes the plastics and chemicals used in packaging, pipes and coatings, so its results offer a clue about factory and consumer demand. The profit jump came from higher plastic prices and cost cuts, while the amount of product sold fell 1% from a year ago. Management says its savings plan is on track to add more than $1 billion in yearly profit in both 2026 and 2027.
