What happened
The 10-year Treasury yield (US10Y) edged down about 1 basis point to 5.102% on Wednesday as traders expect a Fed hold on Oct. 28 but price in a December rate hike. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. The Fed, the US central bank, raised its key interest rate by a quarter point to 3.75%–4.00% on Sept. 16. Traders put the chance of another increase in October at about 15%, but at about 90% for Dec. 8–9. In a Reuters poll of 100 economists, 94 expect no change in October and all 100 expect a December hike.
Why it matters
The 10-year Treasury yield is the interest rate the US government pays to borrow for ten years, and it sets the tone for borrowing costs across the economy. Fed officials link the rise in yields to expectations for higher Fed rates, heavy AI-related borrowing and a stronger economy. A second hike would keep money more expensive for households and companies for longer.
