What happened
UnitedHealth (UNH) stock rose 3.5% to about $421.50 on Tuesday as a guidance raise to at least $20.50 per share, helped by lower medical costs, extended its post-earnings rally. The company said on October 13 it now expects adjusted profit of at least $20.50 per share for 2026, up from $19.50 to $20.00. Adjusted third-quarter profit was $4.69 per share, beating the $4.14 analysts expected. The share of premiums spent on patient care fell to 88.4% from 89.9%, helped by a $610 million one-time reserve release.
Why it matters
UnitedHealth is the largest US health insurer, so its results show how costly medical care is for the whole industry. Lower costs and a stronger Optum, its care and pharmacy arm, suggest its recovery from higher costs last year is working. But it has about 935,000 fewer Medicare Advantage customers than at the end of 2025, and part of the cost gain was a one-time item.
