What happened
Tesla (TSLA) stock rose 1.5% to $373.71 on Tuesday ahead of its Wednesday earnings report, as investors wait to see whether car profit margins recover from the second quarter's drop. Tesla reports after the market closes. Analysts expect profit of about $0.45 a share on $27.9 billion in sales, down from $0.50 and $28.1 billion a year ago. In the second quarter, the profit margin on its cars (excluding sales of emissions credits) fell to 16.3% from 19.2% in the first quarter. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter, more than analysts expected.
Why it matters
Tesla's car margin shows how much profit it keeps from each vehicle sold. A second drop would suggest price cuts and tough competition are still squeezing profits, while a rebound would ease that worry. Tesla is also spending heavily on AI and new products, with yearly spending guided above $25 billion, so profit helps pay for it. Its shares are down about 17% this year.
