What happened
SpaceX (SPCX) stock rose about 9% to $161.74 on Wednesday after Q3 earnings showed revenue up 161% to $14.58 billion, driven by renting AI computing capacity to tech firms. Sales were $5.6 billion a year earlier, and analysts had expected about $12.7 billion. The AI business, largely rented to firms such as Anthropic and Google, brought in $7.56 billion, more than half of all sales. SpaceX also reported a $4.4 billion profit, after a loss a year earlier. Nvidia rose about 1.6% as well.
Why it matters
SpaceX's results suggest demand for AI computing power is still growing fast, which helped revive the AI trade, the bet that spending on AI data centers will pay off. The company also posted its first operating profit since going public in June, while spending $19.6 billion on equipment in a single quarter. Elon Musk said a merger with Tesla has merit, giving shareholders another storyline to follow.
