Oil Rises to $110 a Barrel on Hormuz Mine Claims

Why is oil up today?

Brent crude (BZ=F) rose about 1% to roughly $110 a barrel on Wednesday as Iran's Guards claimed supertankers hit Hormuz mines, claims UK monitors say are unsubstantiated but that feed supply fears.

What happened

Brent crude (BZ=F) rose about 1% to roughly $110 a barrel on Wednesday as Iran's Guards claimed supertankers hit Hormuz mines, claims UK monitors say are unsubstantiated but that feed supply fears. Iran's Guards said Saturday a second supertanker with over 2 million barrels hit a Hormuz sea mine, hours after a similar claim. The UK maritime watchdog UKMTO said there is "no substantiation" for those claims. The Guards made another mine claim on Tuesday. Hormuz is a narrow sea route for much of the world's oil, so threats to ships push prices up.

Why it matters

Brent crude, the global oil price benchmark, is about 76% higher than a year ago and up about 11% in the past month. That feeds into petrol, shipping and airline costs. Ships in the area have been attacked repeatedly, with at least 18 vessels hit in two weeks, so traders treat every claim as a possible threat to supply even when it is unproven. UKMTO has logged 153 confirmed incidents since March.
