Nvidia China Chip Orders Top $35B, Far Above Supply

What happened
Nvidia (NVDA) faces orders worth over $35 billion from ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent, Reuters reported Tuesday, but supply is so short that buyers may get only 5% to 10%. The three Chinese tech giants ordered more than 3 million RTX PRO 5500 cards, a workstation chip designed to meet US export rules, at about $11,400 each. Nvidia can make no more than 3 million of the cards worldwide in 2027, while orders from China alone top 6 million. Early samples are due in December, with deliveries from the first quarter of 2027.
Why it matters
Nvidia has far more demand from China than it can supply, which caps how much it can earn there. US rules block its most powerful AI chips from China, so buyers are turning to this less powerful card. China data-center sales are under 1% of Nvidia's revenue today, and filling 5% to 10% of these orders would still mean roughly $1.75 billion to $3.5 billion in sales. Chinese rivals like Huawei are also gaining ground.
