What happened

The U.S. dollar index (DXY) fell to about 101.5 on Tuesday, its lowest since Oct. 1, after reports that Washington and Tehran gave preliminary approval to a Qatar-Pakistan Iran compromise plan. Israeli media said the plan had U.S. approval and Iran's consent, but Iran quickly said talks continue and reports that a deal is close are wrong, so the dollar recovered to about 101.7. Brent oil fell more than 3% at one point, then settled down 0.69% at $108.79, while the 10-year Treasury yield (the interest rate on U.S. government loans) eased to about 5.12%.

Why it matters

The U.S. dollar matters to everyday investors because it affects the price of imports, travel and commodities such as oil. Oil near $109 has been keeping prices and interest rates high, so hopes of a deal ease that pressure. Treasury Secretary Bessent has linked higher U.S. rates to energy shocks, so a real deal could mean lower rates and a weaker dollar. Iran's denial shows the move can reverse quickly.
