What happened
Capital One (COF) stock rose about 4% to about $209 on Wednesday after a third-quarter earnings beat, with adjusted profit of $6.69 a share against the $5.50 expected, as credit losses eased. Adjusted profit leaves out one-time costs of merging with Discover. Sales were $16.3 billion, up 3% from the previous quarter. The shares first jumped 3.9% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, when the results came out. The company also released $225 million it had set aside for expected loan losses, which added to profit.
Why it matters
Capital One is one of America's biggest credit card lenders, so its results show how well everyday borrowers are keeping up with payments. Profit improved because fewer card loans went bad and the company earned more on the loans it made (its net interest margin rose to 8.41%). Managers warned the beat was helped by the reserve release and that marketing spending will rise in the fourth quarter.
