What happened
Anthropic's IPO valuation talk fell to about $1.5 trillion from $2 trillion, as some investors balked at slower growth, even after its draft filing showed $16.3 billion of first-half 2026 revenue on Tuesday. Anthropic told investors on 14 October that July–September sales hit $16.8 billion, up 45% from the prior quarter but slower than the earlier jump of over 100%. The filing also shows an $80.7 billion net loss, about $72 billion of it non-cash accounting charges, meaning paper losses rather than money spent. About 20% of first-half revenue came from two customers.
Why it matters
Anthropic's IPO would be one of the largest stock market debuts ever, so its price tag sets the tone for how much investors will pay for AI companies. The $500 billion gap between $2 trillion and $1.5 trillion shows buyers weighing very fast sales growth against slowing momentum and huge spending promises. It also matters for rival OpenAI, which is reportedly seeking new funding at $1.4 trillion ahead of a planned 2027 listing.
