What happened
RTX (NYSE: RTX) stock traded near $193 on Monday ahead of Tuesday's third-quarter earnings, with investors watching its $289B backlog and a China-free rare earth magnet deadline for defense suppliers. Analysts expect profit of $1.78 per share, up 4.7% from a year ago, on sales of about $24.1B, up 7.2%. In July, RTX raised its own full-year profit forecast (guidance) to $7.10–$7.25 per share, and its backlog, the work already ordered but not yet delivered, was up 22%. From January 1, 2027, Pentagon rules bar Chinese-sourced magnets in U.S. defense products.
Why it matters
RTX is one of the largest makers of missiles and jet engines, so its report shows whether defense and air-travel demand is still strong. A big backlog means years of work are already booked. Rare earth magnets are small parts used in missiles and radar, and China makes over 90% of them. RTX is named among the defense contractors most exposed to the new rule.
