What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) fell about 1.8% to roughly $108 a barrel on Monday after Trump waived Russia sanctions, even as Ukraine's 1,000-drone strike hit a St. Petersburg oil terminal. Ukraine sent more than 1,000 drones overnight on Sunday, and Russia said it shot down 1,015 across 15 regions. Fires broke out at the terminal and a nearby fuel depot, and one person was killed. Trump criticized the strikes and, on Friday, waived new sanctions on buyers of Russian oil. Oil had closed Friday at $109.86, its highest level since May.
Why it matters
Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil prices, still sits near $108 a barrel, so fuel costs for drivers and businesses stay high. Ukraine is trying to cut Russia's fuel exports by hitting its ports, while the US move to ease sanctions pushes the other way. The two forces are pulling oil in opposite directions, which is why prices slipped rather than jumped.
