What happened
Brent crude oil (BZ=F) rose about 1% to $110.59 a barrel on Tuesday as traders weighed Iran's threat to target seven Hormuz undersea cables and Houthi attacks on Saudi sites. Iran's Revolutionary Guards, a branch of its military, said on Monday that seven big internet cables run under the Strait of Hormuz and that "new targets" would be revealed if war with the United States restarts. Iran's security chief made a similar warning earlier this month. No ceasefire is in place, and Pakistan's army chief arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to help restart stalled talks.
Why it matters
Brent crude oil matters to everyday readers because it sets the price behind fuel and shipping costs, and the Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea route the Gulf's oil must pass through. The new threat points at a different target: the internet cables that carry banking, cloud and streaming data between Asia, Europe and the Gulf. The warning applies only if fighting resumes, but it adds a digital risk on top of the oil risk.
