What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) briefly topped $110 on Monday after Iran claimed a US strike on its Konarak base, then settled 0.3% lower at $109.55 while a US official denied it. Iran's navy said two light projectiles wounded two people at the base, and that the target was a 35mm cannon. Oil had been down more than 1% earlier in the day before the report pushed it higher. It then slipped back as traders took profits after a gain of about 5% last week.
Why it matters
Brent crude is the main global oil price, so moves in it feed through to the cost of petrol, diesel and flights. It is already near its highest level since May because the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea route for Gulf oil, is badly disrupted. Oil moving through the region fell to about 8.5 million barrels a day last week from more than 20 million the week before. That makes prices jumpy on any report of new fighting, even an unconfirmed one.
