US Inflation Rises to 3.7% as Fed Rate-Hike Bets Persist

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics2 min read6 sources

Why did US inflation rise to 3.7% in September?

US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, reported Wednesday, as gasoline jumped 9.1% in the month, and traders now see a December Fed rate hike as more likely than October.

Key numbers

US CPI (12 months)3.7%from 3.4% in August
Core CPI (12 months)2.6%from 2.4% in August
Producer prices (PPI), monthly+1.3%vs 0.6% expected
Gasoline CPI, monthly+9.1%over half of the monthly rise
Oct. 27–28 Fed hike odds16%from 43.7% on Oct. 14
December Fed hike odds89%vs 16% for October

What happened

US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, reported Wednesday, as gasoline jumped 9.1% in the month, and traders now see a December Fed rate hike as more likely than October. Core prices, which leave out food and energy, rose 2.6%. Wholesale prices (the producer price index, or PPI) rose 1.3% in the month, more than double forecasts and the biggest jump since March 2022. Traders briefly gave a Fed hike on Oct. 27–28 a 43.7% chance after the report, but that slid to about 16% by Friday, while a December hike is priced near 89%.

Why it matters

US inflation at 3.7% means prices, led by gasoline, are climbing faster than a month ago, which squeezes household budgets. Higher inflation makes it more likely the Federal Reserve, the US central bank, raises borrowing costs again, and the average 30-year mortgage rate already rose to 7.56% after the report. Rate-hike worries also weighed on shares, with the S&P 500 down 0.4% that day.
