What happened
Brent crude oil (BZ=F) fell about 2% to roughly $107.70 a barrel on Monday after reports of a Putin-proposed Trump–Xi summit and a US waiver on Russian energy sanctions raised Ukraine peace hopes. Russian President Vladimir Putin floated a three-way meeting with Presidents Trump and Xi at the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, on Nov. 18–19 to discuss ending the war. The Kremlin says nothing has been agreed, and Trump has not said yes. Over the weekend Trump said "great progress" is being made and put off sanctions that could have hit buyers of Russian oil.
Why it matters
Brent crude oil, the world's main oil price benchmark, matters to nearly everyone because it feeds into fuel costs, and it is still above $107 a barrel. It slipped because traders think easier rules on Russian energy and peace talks could bring more supply. Defense companies such as Rheinmetall fell too, since peace could mean fewer weapons orders. Nothing is settled, and the Iran war remains a bigger driver of fuel prices.
