Iran's Rial Sinks to 2.8M Per Dollar as Oil Exports Hit Zero

Benzinga2 min read5 sources

Why is Iran's rial falling?

Iran's rial (IRR) hit a record low near 2.8 million per US dollar in October as a US naval blockade cut oil exports to zero, Treasury Secretary Bessent said.

What happened

Iran's rial (IRR) hit a record low near 2.8 million per US dollar in October as a US naval blockade cut oil exports to zero, Treasury Secretary Bessent said. Bessent wrote on X that "the noose is tightening around Iran's economy," and the Treasury added sanctions on 16 people and 10 entities. The rial has lost nearly 35% of its value since July, and no Iranian oil had shipped by sea as of Oct. 5. The International Monetary Fund expects Iran's economy to shrink 7.6% in 2026.

Why it matters

Iran's rial is losing value fast because the country has almost no oil income left, so imports cost more and savings shrink. The US says the goal is to empty the government's funds. For everyone else, Iran's missing oil and attacks on Gulf shipping keep Brent crude (the global oil price benchmark) near $108 a barrel, which affects fuel costs.

  2. IMF cuts Iran's 2026 growth forecast to a 7.6% contraction, from 5.4% in July.

  3. Bessent says the 'noose is tightening'; Treasury sanctions 16 people and 10 entities.

  4. Brent falls 1.3% to $108.43 after Trump waives some Russia sanctions.

What to watch

  • Whether the rial weakens past 2.8 million per dollar as Iran's last oil at sea runs out.2026-10-31
  • Bessent says two to four months of blockade could push Iran to a breaking point.Q4 2026
  • Whether Gulf shipping attacks and Russia sanctions relief move Brent away from about $108.2026-10-26
