What happened
Tesla (TSLA) stock rose nearly 5% in premarket trading on Friday to about $380 after its new Roadster flipped in the air using SpaceX thrusters, and a Musk post fueled merger talk. The car drove up an upside-down ramp, spun around and landed on its wheels, using jets of compressed air (cold-gas thrusters) built by SpaceX. Tesla says it will start building the car in 2028. Musk shared the livestream with the words 'Tesla x SpaceX', but neither company has confirmed merger talks.
Why it matters
Tesla's stock is down about 19% this year, so the jump shows investors are hungry for good news. The Roadster will not be sold until 2028, and one analyst says it will not move sales or revenue much. The bigger question is whether Tesla and SpaceX could join together, which could change what Tesla shareholders own. Barclays sees SpaceX buying Tesla with stock as the most likely route.
