What happened
Brent crude (BZ=F) fell 0.39% to $105.51 on Friday as traders weighed possible US sanctions relief for tankers against Hormuz shipping attacks and the IEA's weaker-demand warning. Early Thursday, Brent dipped near $104, but it settled almost unchanged at $105.92. The IEA, which advises major energy-using countries, expects world oil demand to fall 2.6 million barrels a day in 2026. Attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for Gulf oil, have surged over the past 10 days.
Why it matters
Oil prices affect what people pay for petrol, diesel and flights, and Brent near $105 keeps those costs high. Easing US sanctions on tankers could lower shipping costs and free up more oil, while attacks near Hormuz could push prices the other way. The IEA says high prices are already cutting how much oil the world uses, especially diesel.
