What happened

Brent crude oil (BZ=F) slipped 0.4% to $105.45 a barrel on Friday, staying above $100 as new US Iran sanctions and Hormuz attacks kept supply fears alive. The US Treasury blacklisted 16 people and 10 companies, including an Iraqi bank it says gave Iran access to US dollars. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the "noose is tightening" on Iran's economy. Iran has stepped up attacks near the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, citing a US port blockade and the sanctions.

Why it matters

Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil prices, matters to everyday budgets because it feeds into petrol, diesel and shipping costs. The new sanctions target the money networks Iran relies on, and the Strait of Hormuz is still carrying only about 68% of its normal oil flow. That keeps supply worries, and therefore prices, high for now.
