What happened
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) and J.B. Hunt (JBHT) stocks fell about 1% and 2% in after-hours trading Thursday after earnings of $0.67 and $1.82 a share missed forecasts of $0.68 and $1.89. Both companies still sold more than expected: Interactive Brokers (an online trading firm) reported $1.91 billion in revenue against $1.87 billion expected, and J.B. Hunt (a trucking and shipping firm) reported $3.68 billion against $3.57 billion. J.B. Hunt said more than $50 million of higher costs for diesel, drivers and cargo claims held back profit. Not every data provider agrees on the forecasts; some show both results as in line.
Why it matters
Interactive Brokers shares dipped even though its sales and customer numbers grew, which suggests investors wanted profit above forecasts, not just growth. The online broker now has 5.58 million accounts, up 35% from a year ago, and raised its quarterly dividend 71% to $0.15 a share. J.B. Hunt's profit rose only 3% on 20% more sales because its costs climbed.
